Beads are an extension of our beaded
buttons line. Our beaded uttons are made solely made
by women’s groups in alternative work settings to
factories by allowing women to work independently at home,
and in their spare time. We provide free training and
material that women can take home and collect finished
good once they are ready.
These beautiful and intricate glass bead necklaces are
made by women recovering from domestic violence through
a Non profit organization called "Saathi" in
Nepal. Saathi means "friend" in Nepali and we
are happy to bring this their product to you.
Saathi
runs several shelters (transition houses) for victims
of domestic violence in various location in Nepal. At
these shelters, Saathi provides training, counseling,
medical and legal help. The maximum stay for women is
three months, but simply providing a temporary refuge
is not sufficient. To provide a longer term solution,
Saathi conducts income generation training to reduce
a victim's financial dependence. The training includes
bead and needle work, tailoring, mushroom farming and
pickle production. Saathi also provides a small loan
to help the women to establish shops or small businesses.
Saathi has several success stories of women who have
escaped their violent surroundings and established a
safer life for themselves and their children. To sustain
the shelters, Saathi sells products. The profits from
these sales go completely towards funding the shelters.
