Recycled Silk Yarn

We offer recycled silk yarn or sari yarn and its fiber from the Himalayas.

Recycled silk yarn is the by-product of colorful saris that women wear in South Asia. It is the loose ends of saris collected from industrial mills in India that is hand spun into yarn in Nepal. The vibrant colors and unique texture of these silk fibers and silk yarn are inspirational to designers, knitters, and artisans. The popularity of recycled silk yarn has extended beyond Nepal and India and has created an empowering cottage industry primarily benefiting women.

We work with women's development groups in Nepal to produce this unique yarn and other hand knitted silk yarn products. Women make this yarn and various knitwear in their homes while not neglecting heir other household chores. 1st Grade Silk Yarn First grade yarn is more evenly and tightly spun, producing a smaller, denser, and more consistent thread diameter. It is soft and easy to use and virtually odor-free. $30.00 per kilo. 10 skeins of 100 grams, about 2.2lbs,	2nd Grade Silk Yarn Second grade yarn has a broader variety of width, texture and color within each yard. It is often used for arts and crafts. It is coarser than first grade. Some portions may contain traces of rayon, viscose, and/or cotton fiber. $25.00 per kilo, 10 skeins in 100 grams. about 2.2lbs

We sell silk yarn by the kilo. One kilo equals 2.2 lbs., and consists of either five 200 gram skeins or ten 100 gram skeins. A 100 gram skein has about 85-95 yards. The suggested needle size is 9 or 10. Some knitters mix this knitting yarn with other types of yarn. Recycled silk yarn comes in unpredictable yet beautiful color combinations; red, pink and purple are often present in the color schemes. It comes in all random mixed matched colors so the colors ways are not offered.
